History of Valentine's Day
There are many stories and beliefs associated with the origins of Valentine’s Day. One of the prevailing beliefs takes the roots of Valentine’s Day to the feast of Lupercalia in ancient Rome, which was celebrated on the 15th of February. The celebration was held in honor of Juno, the goddess of women and marriage, and Pan, the god of nature. Valentine’s Day also has connections to Saint Valentine, as he was considered the protector of lovers and those who were engaged, as well as the guardian of a happy marriage. He helped those who wanted to marry secretly and married them despite the emperor's prohibitions.
In the early 19th century, Valentine’s Day celebrations moved to America, where it took the shape in its present form over the decades. Valentine's Day has been celebrated in Finland since the 1980's. It is considered an unofficial holiday in many countries. Traditionally Valentine's Day has only been considered a celebration of lovers, but in Finland we also celebrate friendship on this day.
